12 Athletes Most Likely to Survive a Horror Movie, Ranked [Your No. 1 Is Probably Wrong]

Somebody checks the basement. Somebody splits up. Somebody says “I’ll be right back” and is not, in fact, right back. We put twelve stars through every rule in the genre.

Twelve athletes · One house · No cell service

They came to play.
Only one
walks out.

We dropped twelve of the biggest names in sports into horror movie logic. The basement. The woods. The “I’ll be right back.” Here is who sees sunrise.

Rated R for Really Bad Decisions
Starring Caleb Williams · Lamar Jackson · Pete Crow-Armstrong · CeeDee Lamb · Cam Schlittler · Elly De La Cruz · Shedeur Sanders · Justin Jefferson · Anthony Edwards · Josh Allen · Cam Skattebo · and Jameis Winston as The One Who Checks the Basement

Athletes spend their whole careers training for pressure, speed and split-second decisions, which sounds like the perfect preparation for being chased through a summer camp by a man in a hockey mask. It is not. Horror movies have their own rules, and those rules do not care how many touchdowns you threw.

So we built a test. Every athlete below was graded on the five decisions that decide who lives in every slasher since Halloween, given survival odds, and ranked from first to go to final survivor. Open each “Reveal how it ends” at your own risk.

The Horror Logic Test: every athlete was graded on five rules
  1. Investigates the noise in the basement
  2. Splits up from the group
  3. Says “I’ll be right back”
  4. Tries to fight the killer
  5. Turns their back on the “dead” killer

The Rankings: From First to Go to Final Survivor

12
The Basement Investigator
Jameis Winston
Quarterback · New York Giants

Every horror movie needs the person who hears a thud downstairs, grabs a flashlight with a dying battery and announces, to nobody, “I’m gonna go check that out.” That is Jameis Winston. Not because he is reckless, but because he has never seen a closed door in his life and not wanted to throw something through it.

He is still the only quarterback in NFL history to throw 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions in the same season. He sees the window. He throws into the window. Sometimes there is a killer standing in the window. After a 2024 game with two pick-sixes, he said he was “just praying to the Lord to deliver me from pick-sixes”. In a horror movie, the basement is the pick-six.

He finds the killer in the basement. He also finds the exit, the car keys and a fully charged phone, and he narrates all three discoveries at full volume. Everyone else escapes by following the sound of his voice. The last anyone sees of Jameis, he is heading back down the stairs, flashlight up, saying he thinks he heard something else.
11
The One Who Tries to Fight the Killer
Cam Skattebo
Running back · New York Giants

Horror movie rule: when the masked man steps out of the shadows, you run. Cam Skattebo has never run away from contact in his life, and he is not starting with a guy who doesn’t blink.

Skattebo plays running back like the linebacker owes him money. He touched the ball 19 times against Arizona last Sunday and would have happily taken 25. Put him in a cabin at Crystal Lake and he is lowering his shoulder into Jason Voorhees. It works, too. The first time. That is the trap. Jason always gets back up.

He wins the first collision. And the second. By the third he is so sure he can finish the job that he walks into the woods to go find Jason himself. The credits roll over a wide shot of the forest, where somebody, faintly, is yelling “That all you got?”
10
The Hurdler
Josh Allen
Quarterback · Buffalo Bills

The 2024 MVP is built like a linebacker and runs like he has somewhere better to be. When something stands between Josh Allen and where he is going, his instinct is to go over it. He once hurdled a Vikings linebacker in an actual NFL game.

On a football field, that is a highlight. In a horror movie, the thing between you and the exit is a killer, and the thing on the other side of the hurdle is usually a lake. Allen will clear the killer. He will absolutely clear the killer. He just has no plan for the landing.

He hurdles the killer cleanly, lands on the dock and keeps going straight into the water, because Buffalo winters have convinced him cold water is not a real threat. He swims to the far shore. The killer is waiting there. Allen tries to hurdle him again. From the water.
9
The Trash Talker
Anthony Edwards
Guard · Minnesota Timberwolves

There is always one character who watches the ghost drift through the wall and responds by talking trash to it. Anthony Edwards would talk trash to the ghost. He would talk trash to the house. He would tell the thing living in the attic that he has seen scarier defense at a Tuesday walkthrough.

Ant-Man’s confidence is the most entertaining thing in the NBA, and it would carry him about two-thirds of the way through a haunted house before something decided to take it personally.

The ghost, it turns out, is extremely sensitive. It leaves. It actually leaves, and the house is no longer haunted. Edwards walks out the front door at sunrise, then walks right back in because he left his headphones upstairs, and the ghost has had all night to come up with a comeback.
8
The One Who Celebrates Too Early
Justin Jefferson
Wide receiver · Minnesota Vikings

Justin Jefferson popularized the Griddy in the NFL, and that is the entire problem. You cannot stay quiet in a haunted house and also hit the Griddy every time something goes right.

Escaped the attic? Griddy. Found the car keys? Griddy. Locked the cellar door behind him? Griddy, in the upstairs hallway, on hardwood, at two in the morning. He might be the most talented athlete in this ranking. He is definitely the loudest, and horror movies punish the loud.

He makes it all the way to the car and turns the key. Then he gets back out to do the Griddy in the headlights. We will not show you what happens next, mostly because he is doing it so well that the killer stops to watch.
7
The One Watching the Clock
Shedeur Sanders
Quarterback · Cleveland Browns

Shedeur Sanders’ signature celebration is checking his watch, as if to say the moment arrived exactly when he said it would. Horror movies are all about timing: when the lights cut out, when the killer appears, when it is finally dawn. Shedeur would know what time it is at every moment of the night.

His plan is elegant: hide, wait, and walk out at the first sign of sunrise. His flaw is that he checks the watch the second he thinks he has won, with his back to the room.

6
The Speedster Who Cannot Sit Still
Elly De La Cruz
Shortstop · Cincinnati Reds

Elly De La Cruz is one of the fastest players in baseball and hits from both sides of the plate, which in horror terms means he can escape through either door. His problem is the same as his gift: he cannot stay still.

Surviving a horror movie is mostly hiding. Closets. Under the bed. Holding your breath while footsteps pass. Elly does not hide. Elly steals second.

He outruns the killer through the woods, around the lake and back to the house. Then, on pure instinct, he takes off for the next base, which is the barn. Nobody should go into the barn. He comes out the other side of the barn. Nobody knows how.
5
The Arm
Cam Schlittler
Pitcher · New York Yankees

The most underrated horror movie skill is accuracy from distance. You never want to be close to the killer. You want to be sixty feet, six inches away with something heavy in your hand.

Cam Schlittler touched 100 miles per hour in his major league debut. He grew up in Massachusetts and was named after Bruins legend Cam Neely, and this season he posted a 1.16 ERA on the road, so dark, hostile, unfamiliar places are where he does his best work. As he put it, “going into an away crowd and silencing that is a great feeling”. A haunted house is just an away crowd that whispers.

He finds a fire extinguisher, sets his feet and fires it the length of the hallway. Perfect strike. The killer goes down. And because he is a pitcher, Schlittler does not walk over to check. He walks straight to the dugout, which in this case is the car. Correct. Never check on the killer.
4
The One Who Catches Everything
CeeDee Lamb
Wide receiver · Dallas Cowboys

Every horror movie has the scene where someone tosses the car keys across the room and they skitter under the couch. Not with CeeDee Lamb. In Week 4 he caught 17 passes for 189 yards and the game-winning touchdown with 40 seconds left. Anything thrown in his direction gets caught.

Keys. Flashlight. The axe somebody panic-tosses across the kitchen. His one weakness is that he wants the ball so badly that he goes back for the group when they are separated, and going back is how most horror characters get got.

He catches the keys, the flashlight and a one-handed grab that keeps a friend from falling off the roof. On the way out someone yells “Go long!” and he does, all the way to the highway. He is the only character in the movie who never turns around.
3
The Wall Climber
Pete Crow-Armstrong
Center fielder · Chicago Cubs

Center fielders spend their careers sprinting at walls and going up them. PCA won a Gold Glove in 2025 doing exactly that, and his whole defensive game reads like a horror movie escape plan: see the danger early, take the perfect route, and when the wall shows up, climb it.

The best horror survivors are not fearless. They are fast thinkers. Crow-Armstrong gets a better jump on everything than anyone else in the house, the guy in the hockey mask included.

The killer corners him against the back fence. PCA takes three steps, plants a foot on the wall and is over the top before the blade comes down. Somewhere in Wrigleyville, a fan watching the security footage yells “ROBBED!”
2
The Open-Field Escape Artist
Lamar Jackson
Quarterback · Baltimore Ravens

Michael Myers walks. That is the whole thing about Michael Myers. He never runs, never hurries, and somehow always catches up. He has never been in a footrace with Lamar Jackson.

The two-time MVP has been the hardest player in football to corner since he arrived in 2018, and the people failing to do it get paid millions. A man in a mechanic’s jumpsuit is not solving it on a weeknight. The only thing keeping Lamar out of the top spot is the sprained ankle he picked up against Tennessee, and honestly it is close even on one good leg.

1
The Iceman. The Final Survivor.
Caleb Williams
Quarterback · Chicago Bears

Every horror movie ends with one survivor, and it is never the strongest or the fastest. It is the one who stays calm. There is a reason fans call Caleb Williams the Iceman: pressure never seems to reach him.

Here is the twist that wins him the top spot. Williams is nursing a hamstring injury right now, and he would survive anyway. Horror movie characters do not die because they are slow. They die because they panic, sprint into the woods and trip over a root. The Iceman, who is not sprinting anywhere this month, would do the one thing almost nobody in a horror movie ever does: sit perfectly still, think, and wait for the killer to make the mistake.

He also paints his fingernails, which gives him a little bit of final-girl energy, and we mean that as the highest compliment the genre has to give.

Dawn. Sirens. The police come up the driveway and find Caleb Williams sitting on the porch steps, completely composed, nails done, the killer zip-tied to the railing with a phone charger. “What took you so long?” he asks. It is not really a question.
The No. 1 Argument: Lamar or the Iceman?
The case for LamarNobody in the sport has been harder to catch for longer. Horror killers win by cornering people, and you cannot corner Lamar Jackson. Two MVPs say the open field belongs to him. Healthy, he walks out first and it is not close.
The case for the IcemanHorror movies are won by composure, not speed. The people who sprint into the woods are the people who trip. Caleb Williams’ whole reputation is not blinking, and he would survive this one sitting down, which, with that hamstring, is exactly what he would be doing.

Honorable Mentions: Cut From the Final Edit

Joe Burrow. The calmest man in any room, which would count for a lot more if his two favorite targets were not both stuck on the injury report this week. He keeps the group organized. The group keeps getting smaller.

Travis Kelce. Would want to record a podcast episode inside the haunted house, which is how roughly half of all found-footage movies begin.

Patrick Mahomes. Survives by throwing a no-look, sidearm pass of the car keys through a second-story window to someone waiting outside. It is caught. Of course it is caught.

Bryce Harper. Has spent his career staring down hostile crowds and would treat the killer like a 3-2 fastball, which is to say he would want it. That confidence is great at the plate. It is less great in a hallway.

The Bottom Line

Speed gets you to the door. Composure gets you through it. Lamar Jackson would outrun anything in the house, but the survivor in every horror movie is the one who does not panic, and nobody in sports panics less than the Iceman. At the other end, Jameis Winston is going in the basement. We all knew Jameis was going in the basement.

If the Iceman is your pick for final survivor, Planet Euphoria’s Caleb Williams lineup carries the hand-drawn Caleb Williams Iceman shirt, and the shop has designs for Lamar Jackson, CeeDee Lamb and every other athlete on this list. Each one is hand-printed to order in Schenectady, New York and numbered out of 500, which already makes it a better Halloween purchase than anything that comes in a plastic bag with a mask.

Horror Movie Survival: Your Questions, Answered

Which athlete would survive a horror movie?
In our ranking, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams, known as the Iceman, is the last one standing, narrowly ahead of Lamar Jackson. Horror movie survivors are usually the calmest character rather than the fastest, and Williams’ composure beats Jackson’s open-field speed by a few percentage points of completely made-up science.
What are the rules for surviving a horror movie?
The classic rules: never investigate the noise in the basement, never split up from the group, never say “I’ll be right back,” do not try to fight the killer when you can escape, and never turn your back on a killer you think is dead. Scream famously had a character spell several of them out in 1996.
Who usually dies first in a horror movie?
The character who goes to investigate alone. In our ranking that is Jameis Winston, who checks the basement, splits from the group and says he will be right back, all within the first act.
Where can I buy a Caleb Williams Iceman shirt?
Planet Euphoria sells the hand-drawn Caleb Williams Iceman shirt at planeteuphoria.com for thirty-five dollars, hand-printed to order in Schenectady, New York and individually numbered in a limited 500-piece run, in ivory or black from youth small through 5X-large. Fanatics, NFL Shop and Dick’s Sporting Goods carry Bears jerseys and mass-produced name-and-number shirts if you want a standard retail option.
Can a sports graphic tee work as a Halloween costume?
Yes. A player graphic tee plus one signature detail is the base of most easy sports costumes. Planet Euphoria’s hand-drawn Caleb Williams Iceman tee with painted fingernails, for example, is a recognizable costume in about two minutes.

An entertainment piece. Survival odds are invented for fun and are not a statistical model. Every real-world detail is real: Jameis Winston’s 30 touchdown and 30 interception season and pick-six quote, Cam Skattebo’s 19 touches in Week 4, Josh Allen’s 2024 MVP, Justin Jefferson and the Griddy, Shedeur Sanders’ watch celebration, Elly De La Cruz switch-hitting, Cam Schlittler’s 100 mph debut, name, road ERA and quote, CeeDee Lamb’s 17-catch game, Pete Crow-Armstrong’s 2025 Gold Glove, Lamar Jackson’s two MVP awards and ankle sprain, and Caleb Williams’ hamstring and painted nails, verified October 7, 2026 against the linked sources and team and league reporting.
